What did the 1994 earthquake do here?
USGS recorded the earthquake's strongest shaking, intensity IX, in and near Northridge and in Sherman Oaks.
- When: January 17, 1994, 4:30 a.m., magnitude 6.7, about 18 km deep.
- Across the region: 60 deaths and more than 40,000 buildings damaged in four counties, per USGS.
- Strongest ground motion: 1.8g, recorded in Tarzana.
- For garages: FEMA's homebuilders' guide names the open garage front as a weak point, worst where living space sits above it.
What garages here tend to need
Housing here is older and more mixed than it looks. Both of its ZIP areas have a median build year of 1970, the 1950s were the biggest decade, and fewer than half of occupied homes are owner-occupied (46.7% and 46.6%), so many garages belong to rentals and condos with doors that have been repaired many times over. The 1994 earthquake left its mark too: USGS recorded the strongest shaking in and near Northridge. So we look at how the door is hung and fastened at the opening, size springs to the door as it is, and confirm the opener meets California's battery-backup rule before any door is replaced.
